Question re ClearType Tuner (New) update/addon for use by ...
My question is this: Has anyone ENABLED the "Cleartype" choice of font smoothing in XP with his machine? When we do - even AFTER trying to "tune it" at the MS site, it is painfully blurry. I have a very old laptop ( P 233 with 4 megs vid on an old Chips&tech chip) on which ClearType font smoothing looks amazing.

As I understand it, Mandrake (being legally cautious) build the the freetype2 library without the anti-aliasing (ClearType?) flag set. PLF (being less concerned by such issues) provide the equivalent library recompiled with the bit set. Hmmm...I'm gonna do an install of a distro using Xorg in a few weeks.

If that is the best that ClearType can do, I don't want it. Why should I blow money on it? Probably why people are holding back for something better. MS Readerworks question about Cleartype...
On my Wintel laptop and desktop (with LCD flat panel display), I run XP with ClearType. This gives me incredible clarity and sharpness with text. I understand some people don't like it, can't get used to it, or can't see a difference, but to me ClearType is one of the most compelling features of XP.

Is Apple using the term "subpixel filtering" instead of "subpixel addressing" to mean that they don't really do what ClearType does? Does anyone know if Apple is working on something that is truly competitive against ClearType? Please allow me to answer the questions as I understand them.
